melancholia

tiff just recently announced the first 50 movies playing at the festival this year and it was hard to choose just one to talk about. but the second i clicked on the website for meloncholia, i know i had to see it. plus it stars alexander skarsgard, just sayin'. the basic plot of the film revolves around two sisters in dispute while the life of the planet is threatened as a large foreign body approaches, portending a deadly collision. trier's main idea for the film was to dramatise how a depressive person reacts more calmly than others in a situation of disaster. what i love is how romantic everything looks. if you check out the website you'll know what i mean.

insidious (the movie) - deliciously evil.

last night i conned callum into watching insidious, the most terrifying movie i have ever seen (and if you know me, you know i'm not easily frightened). i totally lost my cool and became the typical hysterical girl begging to sleep with the lights on. i don't even want to post an image from the movie as the opener so i posted this nice skeleton chap as he seems comical and looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly, or more importantly me. i won't ruin the movie for you, but it's sort of an updated poltergeist you could say. family moves, boy goes into mysterious coma, family moves again, find out boy is haunted - not the house, ghostly/demon beings terrorizing the poor mother, that sort of deal if you catch my drift. the director, james wan, did do a great job switching up the typical horror formula (not too many cheesy, look in the mirror then look away gimmicks). this really is a film that makes your skin crawl. if you think you're strong enough to stomach it, let me know what you think. maybe i've just lost it?
