i hope everyone had a lovely long weekend. mine was spent in the countryside, enjoying all that grey county has to offer. on monday i was lucky enough to catch jamie and his bees in all their glory. for someone who has never been stung by a bee, this was as close as i could stand to the bees without freaking out. the smoke may make them docile, but there are still hundreds of them flying around like drunk little soldiers. as you can see, first he smokes the hive, which i found out puts them into "fire mode" which initiates a feeding response in anticipation of possible hive abandonment due to fire. the smoke also masks alarm pheromones released by guard bees or when bees are squashed in an inspection. basically this confuses the bee's allowing jamie to work without triggering a defensive reaction. after the bees have been smoked, he removes the honey and it's placed into a metal tub which spins all of the honey out of the honeycomb. then he opens the hatch, strains and voila, you've got honey. he even let me take a jar home, and trust me, nothing tastes better than fresh honey spread on toast after a long day baking in the sun.

the bowery

grilled octopus with tomato confit, tomato chips, nicoise olives, baby arugula, polenta and squid ink aioli |

if you're down in the financial district and are looking for somewhere to eat or to catch a drink with friends, look no further because the bowery just opened up. it took over the spot of six steps and the transformation that happened with the space is phenomenal. the space is eclectic with a hint of "punk" thrown in. lots of black and orange with vintage hits, like the stools that are straight from new york city. i don't have a picture of it, but featured in the main front window is a custom neon art piece by up-and-coming canadian artist jarrod wilson.
the food served was nothing short of mouthwatering. my favourite of the night was "grilled octopus with tomato confit, tomato chips, nicoise olives, baby arugula, polenta and squid ink aioli." long name, but delicious. the prices are reasonable, a couple drinks, an app and an entree will likely set you back around $50. not to bad. i love that they cook on a five foot long charcoal grill as it makes the whole restaurant smell like campfire slightly, one of my favourite smells. the word on the street is that they will be opening the downstairs as a live music venue. i had a chance to check out the basement and once this place is up and running, i can see it getting packed real quick.

good people, when they die, go to paris
![]() |
| photo's via pinterest |
it's only the end of march and I'm already dreaming about where to go on vacation
this september. last year my boyfriend and i took a trip to paris and honestly, i fell in love.
so here's to planning another european vacation and to soaking up everything i love
most about the city, especially checking out the local music scene as well as consuming copious
amounts of french baguettes - preferably at the same time!
